THE STREET “DOLL” APES OF JAKARTA

Photography by Perttu Saska
Text by Dora Moutot

On the first glance, it kind of looks cute. On the second glance, it looks troubling. Study it a third time, and it becomes plain disturbing and a feeling of empathy takes over us.

Between 2009 and 2013, numerous little monkeys dressed in baby clothes and masks with doll heads haunted the streets of Jakarta. Dressed up, chained and held captive by a begging trainer, these monkeys would dance and perform tricks in street corners and at the crossroads of the city centre, before stretching out their hand to the passer-bys in a bid to collect a few coins.

Text by Sophie Pinchetti

In the heart of Rio de Janeiro, one building stands as a beacon of hope in the struggle of Brazilian Indians: Aldeia Maracanã. Situated to the nearby Maracana stadium that now plays host to the World Cup, this colonial mansion was once home to the Museum of the Indian People in Brazil. Today, it is barricaded up, following the Brazilian police’s brutal eviction in 2013 of the indigenous community who had been residing in the premises and infused life into the place. It seems as though Brazil’s first peoples are not welcome to the World Cup.

If you take a walk through California’s Disneyland in Anaheim, you’ll notice groups of people with tattooed arms, wearing studded patch waistcoats. Take another look at their waistcoats and you’ll notice that the patches and badges of their waistcoats, as well as that of their tattoos, are to the glory of Disney characters. Here we are, face to face with a patch of Minnie and a tattoo of Walt Disney’s head! Who are these Disney gangs?

NEW YORK’S NEO-BURLESQUE

Photography by Leland Bobbe
Text by Dora Moutot

“Oh yessssss…” is rarely followed by “Ahaha!” In our culture, sexuality doesn’t rhyme often enough with humour. But artists of the Neo-Burlesque scene are attempting to remedy this by inventing a new genre of burlesque. It’s a burlesque where vaudeville and comedy meet the glamour of strip-tease. An absurd kind of strip-tease cultivating the art of ridicule and satire while staying very hot and sexy.

TATTOOED TERROR: EL SALVADOR’S MARA 18 GANG

Text by Sophie Pinchetti

It’s all too often a fatal signature. Inked into their skin, these are the tattoos of the Mara-18, one of Latin America’s largest street gangs. Death, blood and nihilist rebellion are their territory. Los Angeles-born, these ‘maras,’ or Hispanic street gangs now rage terror in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

“WILDER MANN”, TRIBAL EUROPE’S MASQUERADES

Photography by Charles Fréger
Text by Sophie Pinchetti

Pulsing through the veins of the Earth, there are myths as old as time. Some fade into oblivion. But some survive. Part man, part beast, the Wild Man is the quintessential “Other” – this stranger and rebel outsider – our primal counterpart.

Persisting against the odds of today’s digital age, masquerades around the world continue to pay homage to this figure haunting our consciousness since our ancestors first formed nomad tribes or settled into agricultural communities. It’s nothing you can tune into using a Wi-Fi connection: this is a tale speaking of roots and forces beyond the control of man. Dressed as a goat, a devil, a bear or a monster with jaws of steel, the wild man belongs to a realm populated of dreams and myths.
